Indoor Air Quality Testing (IAQ)
Indoor air quality can have a major influence on the health, comfort and well-being of building occupants. Poor air quality has been linked to sickness, absenteeism and reduced productivity with impaired concentration and learning.
When is IAQ monitoring required?
An indoor air quality monitoring programme provides evidence that the workplace is safe and comfortable, it demomnstrates that the well-being and welfare of staff is taken seriously.
IAQ testing is typially required in locations where the atmosphere could be contaminated by micro-organisms, gas vapours, dust or smoke. They could be introduced into the environment via the ventilation systems or be a result of the processes carried otu within the room, for example chemical experimentation, or be present in the furniture, building materials or on internal surfaces such as tables or desks.
What is involved?
Sampling and testing is undertaken to determine the quality of air in an occupied area and/or workplace. The key tests generally associated with this are:
- Relative Humidity
- Carbon Dioxide
- Carbon Monoxide
- Airborne sampling for both bacteria and fungi
- Sampling for specific pollutants or groups of pollutants if necessary.
The results obtained are cross-referenced against current industry environmental standards and guidance. Including the Health and Safety Executive (with partiicular reference to HSE EH 40/02 Occupational Exposure Limits, the HSE EH 40/05 Workplace Exposure Limits and the Workplace Health & Saftey Regulations 1992). We also comply with the regulations by the Chartered Insitute of Building Service Engineers (CIBSE).
A comparison to outdoor air conditions can be made if appropriate. On completion of testing and analysis of results an assessment of indoor air quality can be confirmed. For example, general gas testing for CO2 can also indicate whether a ventilation system is performing correctly with regard to extraction and/or adequate supply of fresh air for workplace activity and population. The assessments are normally confined to areas specified by the client.
